Man watching my son grow up real quick brings home how little time we have and makes me reflect on the bitching i do bout crowds, waves and this and that. Reckon maybe i should just enjoy my family and the sand under my feet and be thankful that i got the luxury of the time to do the bitching i do and remember just whats really important.

Bit grumpy ask the wife !

Hey there just a note to say its been awhile between posts but what with doing a post grad in teaching (photography) and a new baby im pretty time poor at the mo and pulling my hair out with the paperwork so i will get back on track as soon as i have a spare 5 mins. Its been weeks since i got in the water and im pretty grouchy (ask my wife) so the sooner that gets remedied the better.Im still checking out you guys when i need a good read to restore some perspective (funny how that seems the first thing to go when your wrapped up in checking those boxes for the man) anyhoo back to the essays (balls!)

lip service

pretty small day but this guy was making the most of it, caught a few but as usual the blow in crowd were three or four to a wave so came in rather than get all stressed. Hope these guys dont drive like they surf. Mind you hopefully they will be too busy looking for a new job back in london cause the credit crunch bit their greedy arse and they paid too much for their 3rd holiday home in cornwall.

Share the stoke

Had my 12 year old nephew staying with me from up country for the last few weeks, did some fishing and he had his first real taste of surfing. It was great to see him feeling it, pretty much standing from the first wave or two on one of my first boards. I think i got as much from it as he did. Takes you back to the time when you caught your first wave and that feeling like no other, so go on push someone into a few and share the stoke.

for granted

North Shore Oahu
I think some times in our rush to get to the beach to surf we take for granted the landscape that we are lucky enough to visit or live in. Maybe as surfers we sometimes miss things in our race to score the next ride. I know that when i look back over past trips it jogs my memory, i have no trouble remembering the waves of the day but sometimes forget those little moments during the journey to get those waves. And i reckon that is not the destination or the finally getting to the beach that makes the trips, it is the time spent getting there the people you meet and the cultures you experience that make us want to get back on the road. So maybe we should pull over and take a look around us and savour the moments and give ourselves the memories that will last a life time.

On going photographic project. A Place by the Sea

Some more images from a project i started during my degree. The images deal with the development of my local town by the beach. The black fence that surrounds the sites of a particular developer seems ominous and oppressive, and serves to divide the local community both metaphorically and physically. What with the recent credit crunch these sites will lay as scars on the landscape for the locals to live with. If anybody cares the images are made with a mamiya 7 medium format film camera using an 80mm standard lens. the film is kodak portra nc with has great scanning ability and renders nice neutral tones.
